Roots & Wings is a Christian Family Center located in Mazatlán, Mexico, and we exist to keep children in families! Our mission is to prevent the institutionalization of children and build stronger families by providing family-centered child welfare services to families living in poverty.
Roots & Wings is a family care program. We believe that God designed children to grow and develop in families and communities. However, for many families living in poverty, lack of support and assistance often results in their children being placed in potentially harmful situations. They are at risk of being abandoned, abused, exploited or removed from the home and placed in institutional care.
More than 90% of children in orphanages or group homes across Mexico have at least one living parent, and are there not because they are unwanted, but because of the effects of poverty in the home. We believe that poverty should never be the reason a child is separated from their family and that orphanages should never be considered as the first option or as a substitute for a family.
Roots & Wings’ goal is to approach orphan prevention in a holistic way and break the cycles that cause there to be neglected or abandoned children in the first place. We accomplish this by coming alongside impoverished families and offering them assistance through programs that allow their children to remain in the home and build parents’ capacity to better provide and care for them.
Roots & Wings keeps families together by:
Providing safe and affordable childcare while parents are working, where we ensure each child’s physical, emotional, spiritual and educational needs are being met.
Empowering parents and caregivers by providing therapy and counseling, and helping them develop the skills and resources they need to protect and provide for their families.
Providing temporary foster care for children whose parents or caregivers are undergoing inpatient treatment for their addictions.
Sharing the Gospel with each family and the surrounding community.
