Identity Mission

While the welfare offices of Honduras lean heavily upon the work of organizations like ourselves, due to their lack of funds and resources, family-based care solutions like foster care and kinship care are still very new concepts. In order to implement foster care and family preservation efforts, a cultural shift is needed
and Identity Mission must focus some efforts on spreading awareness of best practices in orphan care in order to see everlasting change within the systems of Honduras. God’s design for the care of a child is FAMILY as it states in Psalm 68:6, “God sets the lonely in families.” That is why Identity Mission has formed two programs as a solution to keep kids in family and out of orphanages. The family preservation program works to identify families at risk of losing their children to the welfare system due to poverty. Our team of social workers partners with the biological family to prevent separation from the family unit and within two years reach independence economically and stability as healthy caregivers. Identity Mission partners with the local government welfare offices and the local church to implement a formal foster care program that provides a safe, loving family when separation simply isn’t preventable. Our team of psychologists and social workers recruit and train foster parents and manage the case work for the government until the child reaches permanency. The welfare offices do not have the capacity to operate a foster care system without the partnership of an organization.

Caring for vulnerable children in family-based care programs is a ⅓ of the cost of supporting them in an orphanage. But the reality is that globally supporters do not realize that their funds could be serving more orphans and vulnerable families in a better manner if they simply shifted their giving to family-based, community services like that of Identity Mission. Since 2015, 131 children have been prevented from ever entering an orphanage due to the partners that have decided to take a stand with us. With your help, we can see even more kids cared for in family and less children placed in orphanages!
