Established in 2003 and officially recognized by the Cambodian government, Songkrua Chun Aus Songkum (Rescue) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting families affected by AIDS, orphaned children, and elderly women facing destitution. With a mission to provide a sanctuary for those in need, Rescue operates three centers strategically located throughout Cambodia: Rescue I near Bek Chan, just outside Phnom Penh; Rescue II in Mongkol Borey in the north; and Rescue III, situated near the Cardamon Mountains in Pailin, close to the Thai border. Additionally, Rescue manages three University Dorms, known as ‘House of New Dreams,’ in the cities of Phnom Penh and Sisophan, offering a sense of home and hope for a better future. The organization strives to be a constant support system, ensuring that even as orphaned children transition into Cambodian society, Rescue remains a steadfast and nurturing presence.

Rescue 1 | Bek Chan

Nestled amidst the serenity of swaying palm trees and verdant rice fields, Rescue I was established in 2003 to provide a haven for families grappling with HIV/AIDS. Initially comprising 16 small homes with thatched roofs, the facility expanded in response to the growing need for housing orphaned children who were left behind by the pandemic. The initial set of ten homes, each accommodating either 10 boys or 10 girls with a dedicated house mom, soon multiplied to include an additional block of ten homes for more vulnerable children. Notably, two Granny homes were constructed for elderly ‘orphaned’ women. Presently, Rescue I has evolved into a vibrant community featuring not only various homes, but also an elementary and high school, a learning center, two baby houses, a youth center, gardens, fish ponds, staff housing, and an atmosphere resonating with joy and compassion.

Rescue 2 | Mongkol Borey

Upon their initial visit to the area, it was discovered that 70 children were residing in two sizable makeshift dwellings constructed from bamboo and thatch. Recognizing the dire circumstances, Rescue extended a helping hand to the dedicated group striving to care for these children amidst severely constrained resources. Subsequently, in 2009, Rescue II was established to provide a more sustainable and nurturing environment. Presently, the facility boasts twelve homes overseen by compassionate Cambodian staff, offering care to both boys and girls. Emphasizing self-sufficiency, all Rescue centers, including this one, cultivate their own produce in lush and vibrant on-site gardens.

Rescue 3 | Pailin

In 2011, recognizing the need for expansion, Rescue chose to establish its third center in a picturesque setting on a former banana plantation. The spacious property provides ample play areas for the children. Mirroring the model of the two existing centers, each house accommodates ten boys or girls, receiving exceptional care from dedicated Cambodian staff. Conveniently, two government schools are located just a short walk away. Notably, Pailin, the chosen location, holds historical significance as the final stronghold of the Khmer Rouge. In the present day, adventurous individuals can explore the distant hills, where elusive treasures such as rubies, sapphires, and diamonds are concealed, amid the wild terrain inhabited by roaming tigers.

Rescue stands as a sanctuary for a diverse community, encompassing over 425 children, 20 adults battling AIDS, and 25 elderly women, all supported by a dedicated team of more than 90 staff members.

Even as the orphaned children grow and integrate into Cambodian society, Rescue remains a steadfast home. Presently, Rescue serves as a sanctuary for over 425 children, more than 20 adults contending with AIDS, and over 25 elderly women, all supported by a compassionate team of 90+ staff members.
